OBITUARY

Death of Mrs. Mary Smith

Mrs. Mary Smith died Monday, December 30th, 1908, at her home near McCallsburg, aged nearly sixty-seven years, and her funeral was conducted by Rev. Carl Montanus Wednesday, December 2d, at the Presbyterian church in McCallsburg and interment was in the family lot in the McCallsburg cemetery.

Mary Smay, the daughter of Daniel and Judah Smay, was born in Marion county and came with her parents to Illinois, where she resided till after her parents died. Then, in her young womanhood she came with her youngest brother, Oliver, to join the eldest of the family, Rev. John Smay, in Story county, Iowa. Here, in the later seventies, she married Mr. Jonathan Smith, and they settled down on the farm on mile south of McCallsburg which continued their home while life lasted. Mr. Smith passed away March 22, 1901. About three years ago, Mrs. Smith and George, their only son, all in all to each other, went across the country to Arkansas and remained many months for the benefit of the young man's health. The son gained but the mother lost, for the prevailing malaria of the southern state poisoned her system, made her a sufferer thenceforth, confined her to her bed most of the time for the last year, and finally ended her days. Happily, maternal devotion was reciprocated by filial kindness, and her bed of pain was eased as much as was possible. Mrs. Smith's surviving collateral relatives are her sister, Mrs. Rogers who lives near Des Moines, and her brothers, Rev. J. A. Smay of Ottawa, Kansas, and Oliver Smay of Egbert, Arkansas. Many old and warmly attached friends were mourners with the lone son at the worthy woman's funeral.
