From Nevada Representative July 3, 1908

Capt. Milton T. Russell of Des Monies and formerly of Mitchellville, died Thursday at Oakland, California. He was one of the first men that we met after coming to Iowa, and though the writer does not remember to have seen him for more than thirty years, yet his evident force of character is easily recalled. He was for many years a park commissioner in Des Moines and was a man of much standing and influence. He has a very notable soldier record and was one the famous party that tunneled out of Libby prison. He was soon run down and recaptured; but after he got out again from a Rebel prison in the Carolinas and this time reached the coast and Sherman in safety.
