OBITUARY

IRA MULLEN

The funeral of the late Ira Mullen was conducted at the Evangelical church in Zearing Monday morning by Elder Stauffacher assisted by Revs. Auracher, Skogsberg and Wadding; and the interment was in the afternoona at the cemetery at Summit chapel by Revs. Stauffacher and Auracher. Besides the immediate family of the deceased there were here from abroad Rev. T. M. Evans and wife and son from Hastings, Nebraska, Mrs. Evans having been an aunt of the deceased.

Ira Mullen was the son of Rev. and Mrs. G. W. Mullen; and he was born at Greencastle, Iowa, January 22, 1885. He died at Zearing, Iowa May 1, 1908, aged 23 years, 3 months and 9 days. He graduated from the Nevada high school in 1903 and from the business department of Highland Park college the following year. He was then for some time stenographer for the secretary and treasurer of the Rock Island system in Chicago and was elected instructor in shorthand at Lemars college. Both of these positions, however, he was compelled by failing health to give up; and for the past nearly three years the only regular employment that he had been able to meet had been a principal of a country high school at Sharon Center in Johnson county where he was engaged during the fall and winter term of four months last fall and early winter. At the end of this term, however, his health utterly broke; and the end came as stated.

As has been before noted, Mr. Mullen was a young man of very exceptional promise in every way, excelling in scholarship, in athletic sports and in worthy ambition, and his death is very great loss to his friends and to the community.
