OBITUARY
JAMES EARL
James Earl, long one of the best known and very highly esteemed citizens of the town and county died Monday at the home of his son, C. W. Earl, in Richland township; and his funeral was conducted from that home Wednesday by Rev. A. M. Elliott of Ames. Mr. Earl had long been in declining health, and he was nearly blind; but his last illness lasted for less than two days and was a surprise to his friends and relatives.
Mr. Earl was born near Buffalo, New York, May 16, 1830, and died near Nevada, Iowa January 20, 1908, aged 77 years, 8 months and 4 days. He removed with his parents to Ogle county, Illinois, where he was married to Miss Wealthy Ann Stickney January 22, 1853, fifty-five years before the day of his funeral. Mrs. Earl and one son died at about the same time of diphtheria at Nevada in 1884. Mr. Earl and family removed from Illinois to Story county in 1870 and settled upon the farm in Richland township, where he died. The moved into Nevada however, in the early '80s and here resided until about five years ago, when Mr. Earl returned with his son Clarence to the farm. During the most or all of the residence in Nevada Mr. Earl was engaged alone or with his son in the livery business. He thus became known to nearly everyone in town or county, and by all he was held in high respect. Since his retirement from business he has not been in condition to resume active work but has remained quietly on the farm. He was in town once in November last, when he said it was his first trip to town for six months. He then seemed fail; and he was so nearly blind as not to be able to recognize familiar acquaintances. This, we understand, was his last visit to the town.
Mr. Earl leaves his son Clarence W., one daughter, Mrs. Clark French, eleven grand-children and one sister, Mrs. Maria Karney* of Cedar Falls. His sister was not able to some to the funeral; but the children and all but one of the grandchildren were present.
*SUBMITTER'S NOTE: James Earl's sister was Mariah (Earl) Carney, not Maria Karney as stated.
