DEATH OF Z. SHUGART
Funeral Here This Afternoon-
Zacharia Shugart, for many years one of the most active and best known citizens of Story county, died with heart trouble Tuesday evening at his home at Ottawa, Kansas, and his funeral is held at the Presbyterian church in Nevada at two-thirty this afternoon. His death is much of a surprise to his friends here; for he has been in Nevada twice this fall, once to bring Mrs. Shugart to the Sanitarium and again, only about a month ago, to take her home, and on each occasion he reported himself as being in excellent health and had that appearance.
Mr. Shugart was a native of Pennsylvania, where he was born March 2, 1834, and he died as stated at Ottawa, Kansas, November 29, 1910, aged 76 years, 8 months and 27 days. He was ninth in a family of thirteen children of John and Mary Reed Shugart, and with the family he removed in childhood and youth, first to Ohio and thence to Princeton, Illinois, where he grew up and spent the earlier years of his manhood. He was married there on December 22, 1858 to Elizabeth Holbrook Downing with whom he celebrated their golden wedding nearly two years ago at Ottawa. They remained at Princeton until 1871, when they removed to Nevada, where they lived for about thirty years, leaving about ten years ago for Ottawa, Kansas, which has since been their home. Since their removal however, Mr. Shugart has been a frequent visitor in Nevaa and his friends here have had opportunity to watch him growing old gracefully. All his life Mr. Shugart was a man of activity, force and character; he was interested in what was for the public welfare and he was successful in his own affairs. He was a worthy man and good citizen, a promoter of good morals and the accumulator of a competence.
Mr. and Mrs. Shugart had nine children, of whom three died in infancy and another, Herman D., just as he was coming to manhood. The others are Ella, Mrs. H. M. Funson of Minneapolis; Fannie B., Mrs. A. L. Farrington of Ottawa; Grace May of Ottawa; Lillian, Mrs. John F. Farrington of Ottawa; and Angelia, Mrs. T. L. Fifer of Tacoma. Besides his wife and these five children, Mr. Shugart also leaves six grandchildren, four sons-in-law and numerous collateral relatives. His body arrived on the noon train today accompanied by Mrs. Shugart, her daughters, Fannie, Grace and Lillian, her son-in-law, John F. Farrington and Thos. Shugart, a cousin of Mr. Shugart living at Ottawa. Mr. and Mrs. Funson and their son Harry arrived this morning from Minneapolis. All of the children are therefore here excepting Angelia, Mrs. Fifer, of Tacoma.
