A memorial service for former Charleston resident the Rev. J. Malcolm Turkington, 81, of Keizer, will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, at the Charleston Community Church. Interment was at Willamette Cemetery in Portland.
He was born Dec. 12, 1923, in Nevada, Iowa. He died May 7, 2005, in Keizer.
Malcolm was reared in Nevada, Iowa, and moved to the Northwest after joining the U.S. Navy in 1951. After graduating from Multnomah Bible College in 1956, he moved his family to Charleston to pastor the Charleston Community Church, where he pastored for 43 years. In 1957, Malcolm joined the Charleston Volunteer Fire Department, eventually serving as the assistant chief and chaplain until his retirement in 2001.
He leaves behind many who will miss him, including his loving wife, Lois; son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Susan of Salem; grandsons, Jonathan and wife, Rabecca, David, Stephen, Matthew and Jesse; along with two great-grandchildren, Rachel and Jaxon, all of Salem.
With respect to his wishes, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Charleston Community Church for missionaries or to the Gideons International.
