Death of Mrs. H. C. Wickham

Once more the grim reaper has descended and taken from our midst one who has spent a long and useful life. One who from the beginning of our county and the western part of the state had not only been a tender and loving mother to her own children but has watched over and cared for many a sojourner who like herself had come to seek fortune and a new home in a new country.

Paulina R. Mallory was born in Dryden, Tompkins county, New York on June 6, 1837, and it was there that she resided until the 1st day of December 1857 when she was married to H. C. Wickham who survives her.

She came to Iowa with her husband in 1858 an settled on the place where she passed this life two miles northwest of Zearing in Lincoln township, Story county, Iowa. She was the mother of fifteen children all of whom grew to young manhood and young womanhood. Three of these, however, have preceded her to their eternal resting places, two daughters, Elizabeth Abbott, Henrietta Jessup and one son Frank Delos. She leaves to mourn her death her husband Haralis Cone Wickham* and twelve children: Eliza J. Bunker of Missouri; Robert H. Wickham; Lydia E. Arrasmith of Iowa Falls; E. Cornell Wickham of Madison, South Dakota; Anna L. Wickham of Nevada, Iowa; John Z. Wickham of Ames, Iowa and Miss Minerva Wickham, William R. Wickham, Charles O. Wickham, Mrs. Jane Phillips, Mrs. Mary P. Adams, and Mrs. Lula E. Cerk all of Zearing, Iowa.

She has made her home on the homestead continuously since she came to this country fifty-three years ago until on the 9th day of July, 1910 when the candle of life was snuffed out and her soul was taken to its eternal resting place. She was 78 years, one month and three days of age.

The funeral services were held in the United Evangelical church at Zearing, Iowa, July 11, 1910 by Rev. C. H. Stauaffcher assisted by Rev. H. L. Lewis. Interment was held in the Zearing cemetery.

SUBMITTER'S NOTE: The husband of Paulina R. (Mallory) Wickham was Horatio Cone Wickham, son of Robert Usher Wickham and Henrietta Cone.
