Obituary.
Alexander Duff, a former resident of this city and of the early settlers of the county, died at Ottawa, Illinois on Sunday evening last. He came with his family to Story county in 1863 and settled on a farm just north of and adjoining the present town plat of Ames. He shortly thereafter bought up all the land upon which that town is located and upon the advent of the Railroad conveyed it to John I. Blair. At that time he was a man of considerable means and took an active part in building up the place. He was public spirited and generous to a fault, well informed and always courteous and kind. All who came in contact with him were ever afterwards his friends. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, 83 years ago; came to this country when 20 years old; and settled in Syracuse, N. Y., where he remained until coming to Iowa. Of late years he has been confined to his chair, unable to walk, from the effects of rheumatism. He was twice married and by his first wife* had three sons who are all living. His second wife, Mrs. Cynthia O. Duff*, survives him. Mr. John Duff of this place is a brother.
SUBMITTER'S NOTE: Alexander Duff married (1) Sarah Ann Kellogg (daughter of Henry Kellogg and Sarah Reynolds) on 1 January 1837 and (2) Cynthia Olive Kellogg (daughter of Pearl Kellogg and Lucy Maria Northrup) on 15 February 1849.
