Girl Smothered in the Mud

Emma Ritland, nine-year-old daughter of B. J. Ritland, east of McCallsburg, was found by her father Friday afternoon dying in the road, and she actually did die before he could carry her to the house. It appears that the child was given to epilepsy, and that on her way to the mail box after the mail she was seized with a fit and fell with her face in the mud, the result being that he was practically smothered before her absence was noted as too great and search initiated.

From Nevada Representative December 3, 1909 (front page)

The funeral of Emma Ritland, the nine-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Ritland, was held Monday, at the residence near McCallburg, at eleven o'clock and at Roland at three o'clock, where the body was interred. The sympathy of their many friends is extended to the bereaved.
