Carroll Marshall Killed

City Marshall Hatton of Carroll was killed Tuesday morning by one of a pair of burglars that he was trying to arrest. The burglars appear to have been rather of an amateur sort, and they were discovered in a Carroll residence by the returning owner, who was not armed and from whom they easily got away, but who raised a disturbance about them. This was on Monday evening, and early Tuesday morning, the marshall and deputy started out after the burglars, who were supposed to have left town. They appear in fact to have been easily overtaken and when he reached them on the road, the marshall attempted to arrest them. One of them stood all right but the other ran, and while the marshall was shooting at him, the horses got excited so that the deputy had to five his attention to them. this diversion of the deputy put the first burglar in a position to become active and he pulled a gun and shot the marshall in the back. The deputy loaded the marshall into the buggy and took him to the nearest doctor's office, where he died soon after. In the meantime another posse took after the burglars and captured them without very much more difficulty landing them safely in the jail at Carroll.
