From Nevada Representative September 3, 1909 (front page)

Killed at a Crossing.

Harold Hempstead, aged eighteen, only son of Rev. Charles Hempstead, formerly of Nevada, met his death August 13 at a railroad crossing at Lewis Center, Ohio. The young man in a buggy awaited the passing of the north bound Pennsylvania train, then, not observing the on-coming Big Four train, whose approach was obscured by smoke and general rumble , he tried to cross. The rig was struck with terrific force and young Hempstead was hurled against a tree and instantly killed. The horse also was killed. Rev. Charles Hempstead was the eldest of the Hempstead family that grew up on the farm half a mile south of the Sime place, the other members of the family being Bert Hempstead and Mrs. Bell Hempstead-Sill, both of Clinton, Iowa, and Mrs. Jennie Hempstead-Reed of Boone. The deceased had visited here as a child; as a young man he had developed exceptionally bright promise, and the grief brought by bereavement to the parents in their home at the town of Africa, Ohio, must be sore indeed.
