The community in the southeastern part of the county was sadly grieved Tuesday morning when it was announced that J. W. Phares had passed from this life to the life beyond, after an illness of only a few days. The cause of his death was abscess in the head, resulting from la grippe.

John William Phares, son of William Sergeant and Laura Meacham Phares, both deceased, was born in Hamilton, Ohio, October 22, 1852, and died at his home at 3:40, Tuesday morning February 25, 1908, aged 55 years, 4 months and 3 days. His parents moved from Hamilton to Columbus, Ohio, where he grew to manhood. Later he resided for eight years on a farm near Odgen, Champaign county, Illinois. He was united in marriage February 3, 1882 to Mrs. Didama Crosby at Covington, Indiana, to which union even children were born. In August, 1885, he, accompanied by his father, came to Story county, Iowa, and located on the farm on the south edge of New Albany township, where he and his family have since that time made their home, his wife and son following a few months later. Deceased leaves to mourn his death, his wife and children: David W., Laura J., Goldie D., Bennie H., Louisa M., Harry G. and Minnie R.; stepson Edgar A. Crosby of Roswell, New Mexico, one brother, C. A. Phares of St. Joseph, Illinois; and two sisters, Mrs. Laura P. Gilbert and Mrs. Josephine P. Romans, both of Seattle, Washington.

The above obituary was read by Rev. S. A. Fleming at the funeral service in the Christian church of Collins, Thursday afternoon February 27, at 2 o'clock. Rev. S. A. Fleming preached an appropriate and eloquent discourse for the solemn occasion to a sympathetic audience that filled the building. The music was inspiring and pathetically rendered. The floral tributes were beautiful. The Brotherhood of American Yeoman, of which order deceased has been a member for eight years, had charge of the funeral arrangements and conducted the services at Evergreen cemetery, where interment was made.

Mr. Phares was one of the best known farmers in this neighborhood and was universally respected. He was a kind, loving husband and father, ever thoughtful of his children and home. As a neighbor and friend he was held in high esteem. He enjoyed a liberal education and was well read and informed on political and scientific affairs, for which the he had a natural taste. His presence will be greatly missed not by the sorrowing relatives alone, but also by a large circle of friends.

The heartfelt sympathies of the entire community are given to the bereaved wife and family.
