MARY McCASKEY GROVE

Mary McCaskey Grove, daughter of Robert and Sarah McCaskey, was born in Carrol county, Ohio October 9, 1844, and passed away at her home at Ames, Iowa, May 7, 1920.

She was one of family of twelve, three sisters remain to mourn their loss.

She was married March 28, 1867 to William H. Grove. To this union were born four children. She is survived by one son, Walter S., the husband and three children having preceded her.

She came to Boone county in 1865, being one of the pioneer teachers of that county. She also taught in Ohio. Being a great reader, she kept informed on the important topics of the day, being ready to discuss them with those who called upon her. She was of a naturally retiring disposition, but enjoyed the association of friends and took an active interest in all affairs of Story county for fifty-three years, and is one of the last of the true pioneers.

Her last illness dated from December 25, 1918, when she suffered a stroke of paralysis which made her partially helpless. Since that time she has been a semi-invalid, but during this time was always considerate of those who cared for her, cheerful and uncomplaining.

In her passing, a devoted mother, a true friend and helpful neighbor has gone from the community. The influence of her sterling worth of character will long be kept among those who knew her best.
