PETER ORNING
Peter Orning, 65, for the past 17 years owner of the Ames Glass and Awning company, died Sunday at the Mary Greeley hospital after a three months illness with ulcers of the stomach.
He was born in Stord, Norway, in 1874, and came to Story county in 1893. He farmed a while near Gilbert and later managed harness, furniture and implement concerns in Story City. He was married to Matilda Jacobson of Gilbert in 1897, who, with three sons, Willie of Nashville, Tenn., Edwin of Ames, and Arthur of Pittsburgh, Pa., two daughters, Mabel of Ames and Mrs. Carl Peterson of Mount Ayr, survives him; also five brothers, Alfred and Martin of Ames, Torger of Minneapolis, Carl of Bergen, Norway, Michael of Statner, England; two sisters, Karen and Magra Orning of Bergen, Norway. Also surviving are three grandchildren.
In 1922 he established the firm now known as the Orning Glass and Awning company in Ames. During recent years he has operated this concern in partnership with his son, Edwin C. Orning.
He was a man of sterling principles, a worker in his church, high type in business dealings and a splendid workman in whatever he was doing.
Funeral services were held at the Bethesda Lutheran church yesterday afternoon, in charge of his pastor, Rev. A. N. Rogness. Burial in the Ames cemetery.
