James B. Swearingen
James Boyer Swearingen was born June 1842, at Freeman's Landing, West Va. In 1862 he enlisted in the Civil War and served until its close. In 1867 he was united in marriage to Emily J. Thrapp at Newark, Ohio. To this union five children were born. His wife died Feb. 28, 1901.
Sept. 21, 1902, he was united in marriage to Ida M. Arrasmith who with three of the children, Phil and Mae Dodds of Los Angeles, Calif., and Bessie Nelson of Bay City, Mich., still survive him. One son Ben and an infant daughter preceded him to the great beyond.
He with his family moved to Des Moines in 1882 where they resided for 15 years, coming from there to the present home in Story county in 1897, where he lived continuously until his death Nov. 29, 1922, being at the time of his death 80 years, 5 months, and 8 days old.
The funeral services were held at the Pleasant Grove church Dec. 1st, the sermon preached by Rev. browning of the Christian church of Ames. He was laid to rest in the little shaded quiet cemetery of the Pleasant Grove church.
