Ronald "Duane" Reed, 84, of Zearing, passed away on Sunday, May 29, 2016 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at Fredregill Funeral Home, in Zearing, from 5-7 p.m. Funeral services will be at the Bethel United Methodist Church on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in the Lincoln Township Cemetery in Zearing.
Duane was born in Illinois Grove, Iowa on January 21, 1932 to Claire Sr. And Ethel (Batson) Reed. He attended Zearing High School and graduated in 1949. Following school he joined the Marines and served during the Korean Conflict. After serving his country he returned to Zearing and worked at the Reed Farm and began a livestock buying company as well as a livestock trucking company. He married Lucile "Luci" Wickham at the Evangelical United Bethel Church (now the Bethel United Methodist Church) on November 22, 1951. Of this union two children were born. They were life long Zearing community leaders. Duane was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church, the Zearing American Legion Post #116, and he served on the Minerva Valley Telephone Board for many years. Duane loved to spend time with his family taking them boating, skiing, snowmobiling, and go-carting. He also enjoyed spending time at the Reed Farm and the shack, traveling, celebrate his birthday, and going to Zearing coffee time.
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife of almost 65 years Luci; children Roxanne Mehlisch, and Rick (Penney) Reed; grandchildren Brian Mehlisch, Michelle (Bruce) Short, Stacie (Erick) Hill, Jennifer (Mark) Britten, Robbie (Jeff) Anderson, and Ryan Reed; great-grandchildren Devan, Taylor, Lauryn, Jenna, Hunter, Addison, Trevor, and Emma.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Claire Jr. and Donald "Butch", sisters Jane Duns and infant Arlene, and son-in-law Gary Mehlisch.
