James Donald Fitzgerald, 95, of Nevada, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2016, at Bethany Manor in Story City.

Don was born May 13, 1921, to James D. and Marguerite (Heintz) Fitzgerald of Nevada. Don graduated from Maxwell High School in 1940. On September 20, 1943, he married Myrtle Wirth at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Gilbert. Myrtle preceded Don in death on March 17, 1999. Don married Verla Hunt in Nevada, Iowa on June 24, 2000.

While Don worked at Marshalltown Manufacturing Company for a short time, for much of his life he was engaged in farming in Story County. From December 1966 until his retirement in May 1986, he was employed as a custodian for the Ames Community School District. He was a long-time member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Nevada and Moose Lodge in Ames.

Don is survived by his wife, Verla; son Marion Fitzgerald of Morton, Illinois; and daughters Sandra (Robert) Dahlgren of Fairfax, Carol (Chuck) Cunningham of Cedar Rapids, Diane (Bill) Green of North Liberty, and Audrey (Gary) Thompson of Round Rock, Texas; stepchildren Kathy Shaw and Dennis Hunt of Nevada and Bob (Deanne) Hunt of Colorado; nine grandchildren, five step grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. In addition, Don is survived by his sister Evelyn Smith of Nevada and sisters-in-law Irene Faust of Coon Rapids, MN, and Mary Wirth of Ames; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother Robert of Nevada, four sisters-in-law, and four brothers-in-law.

Visitation will be 4-7 PM Wednesday, June 29, 2016, at Rasmusson-Bacon Funeral Home and Crematory in Nevada with a vigil service at 7:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM Thursday, June 30th at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Nevada. Memorials may be directed to the family.
