From Nevada Representative January 24, 1891

Obituary.

The brief illness of Mrs. Maria Horton, referred to in these columns last week, terminated fatally Friday morning, and her funeral services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Horswell at the Presbyterian church Saturday afternoon. Her age was 54 years. Clara Maria Gilman was the adopted daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Horace Perkins, of St. Lawrence county, N. Y.; and in the neighborhood of her nativity she grew to womanhood and passed two years of married life as the wife of T. W. Mitchell, a brother of our late fellow townsman, Judge R. H. Mitchell. After the death of Mr. Mitchell Nevada became her home, and her marriage to Mr. John Horton occurred in 1872. Death claimed her second husband in 1889. To his grown up children she was a devoted friend. For her own three orphans aged now respectively, 15, 13 and 11 years, she had struggled hopefully and heroically through weakness and adversity to preserve the sacred shield of maternal home influence. She won esteem from those whose lives were touched by hers and bravely and truly earned the commendation, "She hath done what she could."
