Last Rites for W. C. Johnson Largely Attended

Funeral services for the late W. C. Johnson, 73, who passed away Sunday evening at his home by the Rev. O. E. Cooley, were very largely attended by sorrowing relatives and friends.

The front of the church and the bier were banked with an unusually large number of beautiful floral offerings which gave evidence of the high regard in which the deceased had been held in this community. The flowers were cared for by Mrs. E. C. Wendel, Miss Sybil Danskin and Mrs. Ansel Freeland.

The music was furnished by Mrs. Norman C. Dobson at the organ with Mrs. Theron Case singing two solos, "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross."

The casket bearers were George Taylor, Dean Robertson, Elmous Sampson, Ralph Cessna, Lloyd Jensen and Sam Peterson.

Committal was in the Nevada cemetery where the Masonic service was in charge of I. R. Kempkes and very impressively given.

Rev. O. E. Cooley made the closing prayer.

The following life story of the deceased was read at the funeral service by Rev. Cooley who also gave a fine tribute to the life of Mr. Johnson which had been an exemplification of Christian charity and kindness in the home, the church, the lodge and the community.

W. C. Johnson

"Walter Creighton Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis William Johnson, was born Nov. 20, 1872, at West Union, Ohio. Passed away at his farm home west of Nevada on Sunday evening, June 23, 1946. His death followed illness of about a month's duration.

In 1899 he was united in marriage to Ida Mae Converse, being married at Nevada. To this union were born two sons, Kenneth C. who lives near Collins, and Kermit F. of Shelby, N. C. Mrs. Johnson died in 1916. Later Mr. Johnson was married to May Craft of Linden, Iowa.

Mr. Johnson lived nearly fifty years on the same farm. Until recent weeks he was very active for a man of his age and was able to do a man's work about the farm.

Besides his wife he leaves his two sons, and also three grandchildren. They are: Wendell C. now in Japan serving in the U. S. Army, LaVonne and Bryce. Also one sister, Mrs. Orrie Cook of Des Moines, and three brothers, Clifton Johnson of Santa Barbara, Calif., Dwight Johnson of Brookins, S. D. and Porter Johnson of Nevada. Also one sister, Sarah Moore, now deceased.

After spending his early life in Ohio, Mr. Johnson came to Illiois, and still later to Iowa.

He was very active in community affairs serving for many years on the Shipley school board. He was very active in the building of the present structure at that place. Mr. Johnson was for many years a member of the Nevada Methodist church, serving on the board at various times, one of the oldest members. He was loyal and regular in the performance of his church duties. He was an active Mason and had also received eighteen degrees in the Consistory. He was also a member of Eastern Star.

One of the many testimonials of appreciation towards Mr. Johnson has so often been, "He is a good neighbor". He was a good neighbor and time and space would prevent any detailed account of his many acts and deeds of kindness towards those about him.

We shall all miss Creighton Johnson, in the home, church, lodge, on the farm and everywhere he was known.

He leaves a host of friends who share with the family the sadness of this hour."
