COLO CHRONICLES
Two sons of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Lounsbury came down with diphtheria Monday, on the same day their sister died. The anti-toxine treatment has been applied to the while [sic] family, and it was hoped the disease would no spread. It is however, still hoped that the cases will not be serious.
Further down in the same column:
Miss Mattie Lounsbury who was reported sick with diphtheria died Monday morning, after lingering between life and death for several days. All had been done that a mother's hands and the skill of physicians could do, but all efforts to save her life proved fruitless. The funeral took place the same day without any ceremonies. Mattie Lounsbury was the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Lounsbury of Sherman township three miles north west of Colo, and was about 18 years of age. She was beloved and highly respected by all who knew her, and was an amiable companion, a loving and dutiful daughter and sister. She leaves her father, mother and five brothers, besides other relatives, and host of friends to mourn her loss. The family have the heartfelt sympathy of all in their sad bereavement. It is sad to lose a loved one but still more sad, when the remains cannot be accompanied to the cemetery and must be buried so quickly.
