GIBSON DIED AT CAMP DODGE

FORMER NEVADA YOUNG MAN SUCCUMBED TO MENENGITIS FOLLOWING THE FLU FUNERAL TOMORROW

Phil Gibson, son of Mrs. T. C. Gibson of Nevada, died at the base hospital at Camp Dodge Saturday afternoon at 2:30. Death was caused by menengitis following flu and abscessed [-------------------------------------------] life might be saved but he grew steadily worse and it was known at least two or three days before his death that there was no hopes and his mother who has been making her home in California was called she being with him at the time of his death as was his sister, Mrs. Albert Persons of Rockwell City.

Phil Gibson had just passed his twenty-sixth birthday. Until a few years ago when he went to Ames he made his home in Nevada with his mother and his grandmother, Mrs. Fannie Adams Newman. He attended the Nevada schools for a period later entering the Ames schools when he went there to make his home with his uncle, Barney Knudson. At the time of his entering the service he was employed at the Tilden Clothing store in Ames. As was the case when he lived here he had scores of friend in both cities. He has a personality that attracted people. He was mighty good fellow, a young man with brilliant prospects for the future and a man whose passing cannot help but make an impression in any community where he was known.

It is thought that body will arrive in Nevada this afternoon over the Rock Island and arrangements have been made to hold the funeral tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 from the Methodist church. The ceremonies at the grave will be in charge of the Ames and Nevada Masonic orders. The pallbearers will be members of the Mono Clan at Ames of which club he has been a member for several years. An obituary will follow on Thursday's issue of the Representative.

GIBSON FUNERAL HELD TUESDAY

LAST HONORS PAID NEVADA SOLDIER WHO DIED AT CAMP DODGE ON SATURDAY

The funeral services for the late Phil E. Gibson who died last Saturday at Camp Dodge were held from the Methodist church on Tuesday afternoon. During the services Rev. Shipman read a testimonial from Phil's former associates when he was employed at the Tilden store in Ames. This with the beautiful floral offerings manifested the high esteem in which he was held by his friends and acquaintances. The testimonial follows:--

We who were associated with Philip E. Gibson in his last work at Ames feel that we would like to express in his friends assembled here, something of the deep affection we had learned to feel for him.

We loved his cheerful optimism and his kindliness of spirit, and we loved his spirit of helpfulness to his fellow employees.

No matter how heavy his own work might be he was ever ready to lend a helping hand in any part of the store where he felt he was needed. Many days he worked hard all day when he really was not able to work, but he never complained and his only worry was that he was physically unable to enter the army. Then he learned that by submitting to an operation he might get into the service. He did not hesitate a moment but went through all the pain and suffering with his innate cheerfulness all for the sake of serving his country.

How proud we all were of him when he recovered and was finally accepted by Uncle Sam, and how glad we were when he [----- ---- ----------------------] try had been performed.

There is a vacancy in our ranks how that we feel can never quite be filled, and there is an image in our hearts of this dear friend who has gone that can never be quite effaced.
TILDEN'S STORE

At the grave the ceremonies were in charge of the Ames and Nevada Masons. The beautifully impressive Masonic funeral ritual was given by L. E. Bosworth of Ames, taps was sounded and the body of this last Story County soldier to give his life for his country was lowered to the grave.

Corporal Phillip Gibson son of M. and Mrs. T. C. Gibson was born in Nevada on December 12, 1892. His age being 26 years, 1 month and 26 days. He joined the M. E. church when a small boy. He entered the service from Polk county, being called in the draft of August 31 and was sent at once to Camp Dodge where he was assigned to Company B of the 56th machine gun battalion of the 19th division of the United States army. Corporal Phillip Gibson leaves besides his mother, one sister, Mrs. Persons of Rockwell City, his Grandmother, Mrs. Fanny Newman, who lives at Santa Ana, his uncle Frank Adams of this city, and his aunts Mrs. A. E. Hyden of this city, and Mrs. B. A. Knudson, of California, and his fiancee, Miss Katheryn Chambers of Lake View.
