Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.
Rose Cecelia Helland of Story City passed away on Thursday April 7, 2016 at Bethany Life in Story City at the age of 95.
Rose was born on January 13, 1921 in Story City to John and Rosa (Leininger) Baldus. She was a graduate of Story City High School and received her teaching degree from Ottumwa Heights College, Ottumwa, Iowa. She was an elementary teacher for several years in Clemons and McCallsburg before marrying Milo Helland.
Rose took great pride in the Story City community. Together she and Milo owned Helland TV and Electric from 1947 until Milo’s death in 1977. Rose served as bookkeeper while raising their five children. They opened a second store, Helland’s Jewelry, in 1968, which she owned and operated until retirement in 1985.
Rose served on the Story City Memorial Hospital board of trustees for eight years and was a charter member of the Hospital Foundation, serving on its board until it disbanded. She was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Story City Development Corporation, Historical Society, Prairie Rail Trail Questers and faithfully supported local businesses. She was a long time member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Rose exhibited her independent and creative spirit throughout her life. Her willingness to take risks and to work hard for what she wanted made her a strong role model for her children. She enjoyed golfing, spending time with her ever-growing family, cooking and baking (especially kumla and potato cakes), and writing prose and poetry. She lovingly wrote and published a book about her heritage and experiences growing up in the 1920’s and ‘30’s, dedicating it to her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her five children: Michael (Barb) Helland of Germantown, Maryland; Susan (LeRoy) Kester of Story City, Iowa; Jennifer Helland of Nevada, Iowa; Martha Helland of Ames, Iowa; Sara (Al) Eggland of Swisher, Iowa; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Milo; four sisters and seven brothers.
