From Nevada Representative March 26, 1890 (front page)

Slater.

....Wright Fread went to Chicabo with three car loads of hogs and one of cattle last Tuesday. On his return, Thursday, he received a telegram from Maxwell, stating this his sister, Miss Ella Fread had died that morning. The news was a great shock to him, as he had left her comparatively well Sunday evening. It seems that she had started to go up stairs and when near the top had fainted and fallen to the bottom where she was found unconscious. She lived only six hours....

On the inside of the same issue of the paper:

Maxwell.

On last Thursday morning this community was very much shocked by the startling announcement that Miss Ella J. Fread, sister of B. Fread, Esq. of this place was dead. She had been sick for several weeks, but had recovered so far that she attended church on Sabbath before. She seem to still be improving, and spent most of Wednesday in sewing. In the evening she complained of weariness, and said she would retire, and started up stairs. A heavy fall was heard, and she was taken up a the foot of the stairway in an unconscious state. A physician was summoned and all possible assistance rendered, but to no avail. Consciousness could not be fully restored. She lingered until 4 A. M. and then passed away. Just the cause of death could not certainly be known. The funeral took place on Saturday, and was largely attended. The music was well rendered by the united choirs of the Presbyterian and M. E. churches, Rev. R. A. Ferguson delivering the funeral discourse. Other ministers present took part in the service. her age was 20 years. She has been in Maxwell nearly two years; was a member of the C. P. church here, also secretary of the Sabbath school. Her death is sorely felt, for she was highly esteemed by all....

SUBMITTER'S NOTE: Ella Fread was the daughter of James R. Fread and Cynthia Ann Scott.
