SLATER DEPARTMENT

Since our last correspondence death has been among us and and borne two of our neighbors and citizens over the river into the silent land. Both in the prime of life, between thirty and forty years of age, and both of that dread disease consumption. Mrs. Oley Apland passed away on new year's morning, and she had blessed assurance that she was going to that better country where no sorrow and pain ever come. She committed her children, four in number to the care of Him who had promised to care for the motherless.

SUBMITTER'S NOTE: Tena Arendts was the wife of Ole B. Apland (there were several Ole/Oley Aplands in Story County at the time) and daughter of Tjaerand Arnevik and Siri Ovrebo. The four surviving children were: Hellen Sisina Apland, Charles Olauvus Apland, Thom O. Apland and Ole Frank Aplin.
