From Nevada Representative October 26, 1887
J. O. French.
The tragic events which resulted in the death of the above named resident of Maxwell are fully described elsewhere in this issue of the REPRESENTATIVE. The death of Mr. French has not only brought an overwhelming sorrow to his family, but throughout the community in which he lived, the county of which he was a citizen, and the circle of his acquaintance, far and near, it has awakened profound regret. This sorrow and regret would have been great had he gone down to his grave under ordinary and usual circumstances; it is rendered doubly so by the deliberate, cold blooded and to all sane minds, causeless murder that unannounced terminated his life. Mr. French was a native of New England and had reached the age of sixty years and few days. After leaving the East he lived some time in Wisconsin and subsequently in Jones county, Iowa. He made his home in Maxwell some five years ago in, the early history of the village, and has since ranked as one of its most useful and honored residents. At the time of his death he was Mayor of the town and an earnest worker in the church and its related interests, a willing and efficient helper in social matters, and in all enterprises promising the pleasure and well being of the community a wise counselor and a public spirited man. Indeed, he was a man of most excellent characteristics of head and heart, one whom any community does well to honor in life and mourn in death.
