From Nevada Representative January 19, 1887

McCallsburg.

....B. F. Burch and children are down with diphtheria. One child was buried last night and another is not expected to live. The town trustees have put the quarantine, secured a nurse and are doing all they can to stop the disease and to take as good care of the sick as they can....

Further down in the same article:

....Miss Jessie Child's school east of town, is closed for the present on account of diphtheria in the district....

McCallsburg,

....Rev. J. W. Sibbit preached Saturday evening and Sunday and Sunday evening to small audiences, partly on account of the unfavorable weather and partly on account of the diphtheria. There are no cases of diphtheria now, and there has been none except in the one family, that of B. F. Birch, where it was very fatal, there being five deaths in fifteen days as follows: Clara, George, Edward, Mabel, Gertrude. The ages ranged from 10 to 4 years....

....The funeral services of Mr. Birch's children is to be held on Wednesday, Feb. 2d, at the school house 1 1/4 miles east of town; the discourse is to be delivered by J. W. Sibbit at eleven o'clock A. M.
