Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.
Sandra A. Sheldon
August 7, 1944 - November 21, 2015Sandra Ann Sherwood Sheldon, 71, of Johnston, IA, died peacefully Nov. 21, leaving this life for the next too soon.
Mrs. Sheldon, known as Sandy, was a homemaker, a cross-stitch artist and an admirer of the artist P. Buckley Moss. She also was the family historian, tracing the roots and tracking the births, lives and deaths of both the Sherwoods, her father’s family, and the Langlands, her mother’s family, as well as the Sheldons.
She was especially joyful this past summer when a Langland family reunion in Story City drew all her cousins plus an uncle and two aunts for a weekend of good humor and reminiscing.
Sandy was born in 1944 in East Lansing, MI, to Delores Langland Sherwood, a schoolteacher, and Charles Sherwood, a professor of horticulture. The family settled in Gilbert, IA, and later moved to Ames.
She graduated from Gilbert High School, took coursework at Iowa State University and graduated from Grandview College. She worked for a decade as a credit analyst for Sears.
While at Grandview, she met Don Sheldon on a blind date. They married a year later, in 1966, and settled in Johnston, where they raised two sons, Mike and Willie.
Sandy’s craftsmanship in counted cross-stitchery won her recognition at the Iowa State Fair and also in competition associated with the P. Buckley Moss Society. She served as president of the Central Iowa chapter of that group. She and her husband were active in the Johnston Jaycees and the Senior Center. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and previously St. James Lutheran Church.
Besides her husband and her sons, she is survived by her daughter-in-law, Kelly; brothers Jan (Mary) and David (Joan); sister Mary (Lynn), plus nieces and nephews.
