Obituary.
Died in the village of Collins, Wednesday evening, April 15, 1885, William Ozmun aged nearly 65 years.
His death was very sudden and unexpected, and the circumstances attending it peculiarly sad. He had been at work during the day on his farm, located some three or four miles south-west of Collins, and on returning to his home in the outskirts of the town appeared to be in usual health, which was accounted good for a man of his age. Soon after this, it being dark, he took his lantern and stated to call at his sons' store as was his frequent evening custom. He seems to have fallen and died before reaching the business portion of the village, and as the night was extremely dark and his light had gone out, his lifeless body was not discovered until Thursday morning. He was not missed at home, because his sleeping room was apart from the sleeping room of the other members of the family, and it was his custom when coming home late, as he not infrequently did, to retire as quietly as possible so as not to awake his invalid wife. His family supposed him to be at home and in bed as usual until the shocking fact of his death became known. A post mortem examination showed that the valves of the heart were ruptured and that death was instantaneous and accompanied with little for no suffering.
Mr. Ozmun was a native of Cayuga county, New York. In early life he came to Ohio, thence to Legrange county, Indiana, where he married and finally to Jasper county, Iowa near the south line of Story. He has lived over thirty years in the immediate vicinity of his late home, and his upright character sterling worth and broad Christian views are acknowledged by all who knew him. His funeral services were largely attended Friday afternoon in Collins. He leaves a wife, four sons, three of whom are married, and two daughters, and many other relatives to mourn his loss. Mrs. Ozmun whose health has been poor for some time and who is now confined to her bed, has the special sympathy of friends in her great and sore bereavement.
The family of the deceased are grateful for assistance so kindly rendered them to their day of sorrow, by neighbors and friends.
