J. W. Utterback, whose sad death by drowning recently occurred at Sioux Falls, Dakota, was a son of W. W. Utterback and a former resident of New Albany township, and brother of J. A. Utterback of Montrose, Dakota. He was a young man of talent and character, and was highly esteemed by all who knew him. His many friends here and elsewhere grieve at his loss and extend heartfelt sympathy to his parents and other relatives. The Sioux Falls Daily contains an extended account of the fatal accident, from which we condense the following: The deceased went to Sioux Falls from Topeka, Kansas, in company with another young man named C. R. Thompson. Utterback solicited order for enlarged photographs and Thompson made crayon sketches for an Eastern publishing house. The two had been out on some rocks sketching the falls by moonlight and had returned to the shore and were drawing in the plank by which they had crossed the channel, when the plank fell and knocked Utterback into the current. Thompson had been ducked shortly before and the deceased was laughing when he fell in. He was supposed to be caught in the eddy and hidden by the foam as he was not seen again.
