From Nevada Representative October 17, 1883
Obituary.
Died on the 14th of October 1883 at Hurley Dakota, of inflammation of the bowels, Charles J. Talbott, aged 21 years 2 months and 16 days.
The deceased was born in Nevada, and here he grew to manhood. He passed through the several grades of our public school from first to twelfth graduating from the high school in June 1880. After that he hauled with a team, canvassed and taught school. In the Spring of 1882 he entered the employ of Quad & Co. lumber dealers of Ames, and after a short service at Sheldahl, was sent to open a new lumber yard at Havelock in Pocahontas county. He remained there from the 4th of April 1882 until the forepart of last August, when he was again sent westward to open a yard at Hurley, Dakota. In September he was at home for a short visit and in excellent health. Early last weeks, his mother was summoned to his bedside, and Sunday afternoon he died, after an illness of just a week. The remains were brought home Monday night; and at one o'clock to day the funeral will take place.
This is the brief story of a young man of unusual promise. Struggling often with adverse circumstances, he made his way through school, won the confidence and high recommendation of employers, became the mainstay of the home from which he went, and by his energy fidelity and manliness gained the high respect and admiration of the whole community. His death is a terrible blow to his immediate friends and sympathy with them is profound and universal. The following is the expression of his old schoolmates.
WHEREAS, It has pleased Divine Providence to remove by death a most beloved one of our number, Charles J. Talbott; therefore,
Resolved, by the Alumni of the Nevada High School; That we deeply sympathized with the family, and especially with the mother, of the deceased in their great and irreparable loss;
That as an association for the first time called upon to observe the lessening of its roll, we mourn the departure of one whom we all loved and admired and for whom the world seemed to have especial need;
That we will attend his funeral in a body wearing a badge of mourning;
That these resolutions be presented to the bereft family, and published in both county papers, and that copies be sent to absent Alumni.
MABEL DANA, Acting President.
BELLE GARRETT, Secretary.
