Obituary.

Mrs. Elizabeth Wolfe Barrows, Whose death occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H. A. Burdick, Nevada, Iowa, Sunday night, Nov. 27, 1887, was born in Philadelphia, Pa., in 1809, and was nearly 79 years of age. She was married in 1835 to Heman Austin Barrows of New York state and their home thereafter until 1859 was in Oneida county. Her husband died in 1850 leaving his wife and family of six young children with limited means. The sterling character of the widowed wife and mother was nobly manifested under these adverse and trying circumstances. Brave and trustful she took up the burden providentially laid upon her, and with rare wisdom, devotion and industry carefully reared and educated her children. Through their mother's aid seconded by their own ambition and exertions, all received the culture of some of our higher institutions of learning East or West. Her only son died at the age of 21 when about to enter an advanced class a Hamilton College, Clinton, N. Y.; and her youngest daughter, an accomplished young lady, passed away about the same age. Four daughters, Mrs. J. P. Walton, of Muscatine, Ia., Mrs. F. M. Harrison, of St. John, Kan., and Mrs. Billings and Mrs. Burdick of Nevada, survive her. Mrs. Barrows came west in 1859 and located at Muscatine, in which city she remained until 1872, since which time her home has been with her daughter, Mrs. Burdick. In her church relations she was a Presbyterian, having been a worthy member for more than 50 years. Her life record has been a most excellent one. She was intelligent, conscientious, energetic and capable in a high degree, and has passed to her reward with the esteem of the general public where known and the abiding love of children. Her funeral services were conducted to-day at 10 A. M. by Rev. I. Reid, and her aged form laid tenderly to rest in our pleasant cemetery.

Mrs. Burdick and other relatives desire herein to express heartfelt thanks to neighbors and friends for kindly help and sympathy in this their time of sore bereavement.
