ROLAND ROCKETS
John Michaelson, one of the early settlers and pioneers of the county died at his home in Roland at five o'clock Monday, June 9, aged 71 years. His sickness dates back to about five years ago, when he became afflicted with bladder trouble, which became so serious that an operation was later performed by Dr. Fairchilds of Clinton and Dr. Rice of Roland. After this he partially recovered, and during the past few years was able to be around and to some extent look after his business at the lumber yard and farms. About two weeks ago, he was forced to take to his bed and gradually failed until relieved by death. He came to Iowa from Illinois in 1856 and first settled on a farm now known as the "old place" one mile south of Roland. After a few years he moved from this farm to the one southwest of Roland, where he resided until about fifteen years ago, when he moved to Roland and became partner in the store with Iver Johnson. He sold his interest two years ago to his sons, M. J. and S. J. and there after devoted his time to his lumber trade. His life had been an active one. Coming to Iowa in an early day, he passed through all the hardships incident to pioneer life. In his dealings with men his aim and purpose, said one of the old settlers today, was to act fair and honestly at all times and in all places. He was a prominent member of Salems church and when able was always in attendance at service. The funeral was held Friday afternoon at Salems church conducted by Revs. Smedal and Whitman. His only sister, Mrs. Peterson came from her home in Illinois to attend the funeral. His children four in number, are living in and near Roland and in the order of ages are, Mrs. E. F. Bell, Mrs. G. S. Mason and M. J. and S. J. Michaelson. There are eighteen grandchildren and one great grandchild, the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Mason. The family desire to express their sincere thanks to Revs. Smedal and Whitman for the kind and hopeful words spoken at the funeral, and to the friends that contributed flowers and to those who decorated the church and grave. Their many kind acts will be cherished and never forgotten.
