From Nevada Representative January 30, 1901

Obituary.

Mrs. Anna Jams Bates died at her home in Nevada early Monday morning January 28, 1901, aged 74 years.

Mrs. Bates was born at Oma, Ireland, in January 1836, and there the first third of her life was passed. She came to this country in 1850 and for some years made her home at Covington, Kentucky, where two brothers and a sister, earlier comers from the Emerald Isle, resided. Her residence in Story county began in 1866 and closed only with her earthly life. In 1867 she was married to Samuel Bates, one of the worthy pioneer citizens of the county and city, whose demise occurred less than a year ago. Mrs. Bates was ill at the time of her husband's death; her subsequent visits to health resorts proved unavailing and her decline continued. She was a faithful, ardent and exemplary member of the Nevada M. E. church during her long residence in the city. She was kindly woman and without ostentation did much to help the needy and to advance the various causes in which she was interested. Her funeral services were held in the M. E. church Tuesday afternoon and conducted by her pastor, Rev. H. P. Dudley, assisted by her old friend, Rev. J. Fegtley. Mr. Geo. James, who with his daughter, Winifred, has been unremitting in kindly attention and care of his aunt during her fatal illness, desires to express his grateful acknowledgement of assistance received from neighbors and old friends of the deceased.
