OBITUARY
John M. Herrick.

Mr. John M. Herrick, father of Mrs. Chas. E. Oag and for many years a frequent and well known visitor in Nevada, died March 21, at the present home of Mrs. Hoag in Wapello, Iowa; and his death will be noted here with great regret though on account of his advanced years, without surprise. The Wapello Tribune says of him:

"John M. Herrick was born at Watertown, Jefferson county, New York, July 16, 1819, and died at the home of his daughter, March 31, 1904, aged 84 years, 8 months and 15 dyas. He was the son of John C. and Catharine (Schaick) Herrick, of English descent. His ancestry were patriots, and served in the Revolutionary war under Gen. Washington. Mr. Herrick was of a sturdy and manly parentage, and within himself a man of more than ordinary intellect, and mature judgment. On October 1, 1847, he was united in marriage with Miss Emiline Sexton of Fayette county, Ohio. In the year 1848 he removed to the state of Iowa, and purchased a farm near the city of Wapello, where he has made his home through all the intervening years. Mr. Herrick was a man of sterling integrity, always courteous and gentlemanly. He held many offices of trust and responsibility, and discharged every trust with fidelity. He was an exemplary citizen, public spirited and always found laboring for that which is best for his fellow man. For many years past he was an honored and faithful member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Years ago he retired from the active duties of life, and spent his declining years in the company of his children, who survive him. They are John W. of Sioux City; William C. of Wapello; Emma Rice, of Watertown, New York, and Carrie, wife of Dr. C. E. Hoag, of Wapello, who survive to mourn the death of a loving father."
