Penny Haugland Sydnes was born December 30, 1924 to Wray and Verna (Shell) Penny in Crisp County, Georgia. Penny graduated from West Crisps High School in 1942 and moved to Macon, Georgia where she worked at Warner Robins Air Force Base. There Penny met and married Orvie Haugland. They returned to live in Story City in 1948 and lived there until 1958, when they moved to Ames. Orvie passed away March 9, 1961. On July 6, 1966, Penny married Sherald Sydnes.

Penny was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames. She loved to cook, garden, paint, sew, travel and play cards and dominos. She made everything from southern fried chicken to kringla and kumla.

Penny is survived by her husband, Sherald; her son, Richard (Sandy) Haugland; her daughter, Robin Haugland Fletcher; her step-daughter, Sherri (Mark) Peterson; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; her sister, Betty Ann Huckaby; and her brother, Alvin (Flo) Penny.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Orvie Haugland; her step-son, Roger Sydnes; her son-in-law, Kim Fletcher; five brothers; and three sisters.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.
