Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.
Mary Ackerman, 94, of Ames, passed away May 17, 2015 at Northcrest Communities. No services are planned.
Edna Mary Elizabeth Ackerman was born June 7, 1920 to Sidney and Mabel Pamela (Smith) Harris in Norwich, Norfolk, England. Mary attended convent school from which she graduated in 1938. She worked for a lawyer as a legal secretary until she was drafted into the British Army in 1941. Due to her typing skills and legal background she was stationed near Royston, England. This is where she met her future husband, Everett Ackerman, an American officer with the 91st Bomb Group (Heavy), and they were married in May of 1944. They both loved to dance and their courtship included the extensive use of a motorcycle and side car which had somehow been liberated. Everett returned to the States in 1945 and Mary followed in early 1946 with their oldest son. Everett was soon recalled to service and he and Mary travel extensively until his retirement in 1966. At this time, Mary was finally able to develop her own home and her garden in which she took great pride until moving to Northcrest around 2007. Throughout her life, Mary was an active volunteer for the Red Cross, and in schools and church. She enjoyed baking, crossword puzzles and reading.
Mary is survived by two sons, Ralph Ackerman, of Ames and Brian (Elaine) Ackerman, of New Jersey; one daughter, Lesley (Daniel) Hannon, of Long Island, New York; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Everett; and two brothers.
Memorials may be made to Northcrest Healthcare Center, 1801 20th St. Ames, IA 50010.
