Betty was born May 7, 1934 in Garden City, Iowa to Otis M. Chentland and Sylvia (Skogerboe) Chentland. She married James Duane Meldrem on October 2, 1954. Jim and Betty celebrated their 50th Anniversary in 2004. Betty worked in food service at the lunch room of the Gilbert schools for nearly 20 years. Jim and Betty lived most of their married life in Gilbert. Betty moved to Story City after Jim passed.

Betty fought a hard battle against ALS during her last couple of years. She lived with that illness the same as she had lived the rest of her life with a quiet dignity and grace.

Betty Jean Meldrem of Story City died Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at Israel Hospice House in Ames at 80 years of age.

She is survived by her three daughters: Joyce Meldrem of Dubuque; Janice (Don ) Uthe of Ames, Janell (Gene) Barker of Fort Collins, CO; one son Jim Meldrem of Story City; four grandchildren: Scott (Jacque) Uthe, Stacy (Rhett) Oselette, Stephanie Uthe and Kevin Uthe; two step grandchildren: William and Stuart Corson; three great grandchildren: Ryan and Jackson Uthe and Ella Oselette; two sisters Nadine (Allan) Beck of Story City, Janet (James) Hilliard of Roland and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, two sisters, and her husband, Jim.

Memorials may be made out to Gilbert Lutheran Church, Wesley Life or ALS.
