Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.
A. Richard (Dick) Johnson, age 93, of Ames, formerly of St. Cloud MN, passed away on Sunday, February 8, 2015. Surrounded by his family, he went home to be with his Lord Jesus whom he loved and served for many years. His stories, generosity, encouragement, sense of humor, prayers, strong heritage of faith and love for his family will be dearly missed. He moved to Ames four years ago and made many friends, and grew to love this community.
Dick was born and raised in Cook, MN to Adolph and Viola (Kjellberg) Johnson. He was a World War II veteran, serving in Italy where he was part of liberating Rome. He came home and a few months later was married to Carolgene, in March of 1946. She wrote him every day during the war. They moved to St. Cloud where he owned and operated a State Farm Insurance agency for 35 years, and made St. Cloud his home for 61 years. Dick volunteered his time freely to many organizations including Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity and Trout Lake Camp in Minnesota.
Dick’s spiritual life was very important to him. He wrote in his memoirs "my spiritual heritage and personal spiritual life came to the forefront in so many stories. I did not plan it that way but it was what was important in my life". His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren all testify to this.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolgene; his parents; and two brothers. He is survived by his sister, Kathleen (Bob) Karklin; two children, Nancy (GP) Foote, of Ames and Bruce (Mary) Johnson, of Charlotte, NC; six grandchildren, Kirk (Amy) Foote, Cari (Dale) Ekbom, Lisa (Ryan) Arneson, Beth (Craig) Hinson, Luke Johnson and Olin Johnson; and twelve great-grandchildren. He is also survived by cousins, nieces and nephews in the United States and Sweden.
A funeral service will be held in Ames on Sunday, February 15 at Christ Community Church, 5501 George Washington Carver Ave, Ames, IA 50010. The family will receive friends at 2:00 p.m. with a service at 3:00 p.m. with a coffee following.
In lieu of flowers, Dick asked that memorial gifts go to provide scholarships to deserving youth to Young Life camp. Three of his grandchildren have been involved with Young Life. Memorial gifts can be sent to: Young Life, Camp Scholarships, 226 N. Adams Street, Green Bay, WI 54301, where his grandson is the area director.
