W. H. STIPP BURIED SUNDAY AFTERNOON
PIONEER OF MARSHALL COUNTY DIED AT MARSHALLTOWN FRIDAY.

State Center, March 3--Funeral services for the late W. H. Stipp, 81, who died in Marshalltown Friday morning were held Sunday afternoon in this city and interment was in the State Center cemetery.
The Stipp family were pioneer residents of the community, he having been engaged in the grain and banking business here for many years. He had been failing for over six months, death being due to causes incident to old age.
He built the elevator and hotel here and was also at one time mayor of the town. Later Mr. Stipp became president of the St. Anthony Savings bank and was also engaged in the grain business here.
He moved to Marshalltown eighteen years ago.
Mr. Stipp was born in Waynesville near Springfield, Ill., June 15, 1842. At the outbreak of the civil war Mr. Stipp enlisted in April 1961 in Captain Carr's company, Illinois Volunteer infantry at Sandwich, Ill. He first enlisted for three months, later re-enlisted for three years and finally re-enlisted for the duration of the war, all in the same regiment. He served in campaigns in the west under Sherman and Grant, was slightly wounded at Aversboro, Ga. and was appointed ordinance sergeant of his regiment in the Atlanta campaign.
Mr. Stipp came to State Center after close of the war. He was married twice, his first wife being Harriet E. Culver of this county, whom he married Dec. 3, 1869. One son was born to them, Harley H. Stipp now a prominent attorney of Des Moines. His second marriage was to Clara E. Hollenbeck, also of this county, May 27, 1884. Three children were born of this marriage two of whom, a boy and girl, died in infancy. The other, W. Leland Stipp, is now a salesman living in Dubuque. Both sons were present when their father died. Mrs. Stipp died Feb. 13, 1922 at Oskaloosa, where he had gone for treatment.
