Obituary for Brandt Van Maanen

The journey of life for Brandt Edwin Van Maanen began on April 19, 1934, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He was the second of two children that were born to Fred and Irene (Van Steenis) Van Maanen. Brandt attended the Greeley Country Grade School near his home at Leighton, Iowa and then Pella Public High School in Pella, Iowa. He graduated from Kemper Military Academy at Booneville, Missouri in 1953 and then attended Iowa State University at Ames, Iowa for 2 years.

On December 21, 1956, he and Vivian De Heus were united in marriage at the First Reformed Church in Pella. To this union eight sons were born: Curtis C., Timothy Jon, Samuel E., Russell Jay, Benjamin R., Martin Ray, Andrew James and Matthew Lee. Brandt and Vivian raised their family near Leighton while he pursued his education and graduated from William Penn College at Oskaloosa in 1962. He later received a Masters Degree in Psychology from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa and eventually got a degree from Moody Theological Seminary. In addition to farming Brandt was personnel director for many years at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Knoxville, Iowa and eventually established Van Maanen Seed and Chemical. Brandt gave of his time and served on the Pella Community School Board at Pella, the Bethel Mission Board in Des Moines, Iowa, the Youth for Christ Board and the World Wide Ministries and Missions Board. In 2002 Brandt was married to Marcelina Linn and to this union a daughter, Brandielyn, was born. Brandt had belonged to the Rotary Club in Oskaloosa and the Lions Club in Leighton; and recently had delivered Bibles to China. In July, 2009, he became a resident at the Oskaloosa Care Center in Oskaloosa where he passed away on Sunday morning, December 15, 2013, at the age of 79 years. Brandt was preceded in death by his son, Curtis Van Maanen in 1995; his father, Fred Van Maanen in 1968 and his mother, Irene Van Maanen in 1992.

He is survived by eight children and their mates and their families. They are:

Of his original family Brandt leaves his sister, Marcia, and her husband, Howard De Prenger and their family of Pella, Iowa. Brandt was baptized and made profession of his faith at Ebenezer Reformed Church in Leighton, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held
Monday, December 23, 2013 at 11:00 a.m.
Third Reformed Church, Pella, Iowa
Interment will precede the service on Monday at Evergreen Cemetery at Leighton, Iowa.

Visitation will be Sunday afternoon from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Third Reformed Church at which time the family will be present.
