Verne E. Barker
Dec. 19, 1918 to Dec. 31, 1991

Verne E. Barker, 73, of Des Moines died of a heart attack at his home.

He was born to Jesse and Mary I. (Nicholas) Barker in Story County, and he lived in the rural Nevada area until moving to Des Moines in 1947. He married Evelyn Anderson on Jan. 9, 1947, in Kansas City, Kan. He retired in 1983 as supervisor for Building Maintenance Service in Des Moines. He was a veteran of WWII, wher he served the military police. He was a member of the American Legion Post #136 of Albia.

Survivors include his wife Evelyn of Des Moines, two sons, Charles D. and Jeffrey A., both of Des Moines; five daughters, Nancy O'Leary of Maxwell, Peggy Hayes of Hazelwood, Mo., Sue Hayes of Elkhart, Helen Clark of Madrid and Louise Barker of Morland; 19 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Dean Wier, on Feb. 13, 1991.

Funeral services were held Jan. 3 at Chet Ryan Mortuary, Nevada. Burial was in the Nevada Cemetery.
