Mildred D. Brendeland
July 1, 1910 - June 2, 2014Mildred Brendeland was born July 1, 1910 to Ole and Rachel (Egemo) Nerness near Kelley, Iowa. She attended Kelley School, graduating in 1928. Following graduation, she attended Waldorf College and worked in Des Moines as a cook and a nanny. In 1935, she married LeRoy (Bud) Brendeland, moved to Kelley and helped with the family dairy. In 1947, Mildred and her close friend, Eva Stensland, started the hot lunch program at Kelley School where she worked until she retired.
Mildred was a lifelong member of Bethany Lutheran Church where she was active for many years in Ladies Aid and the Bethany Choir. She was an accomplished seamstress and cook and loved hosting dinners and teas at her home. In 1992, Mildred moved to Ames and then in 2002, moved to Ballard Creek in Huxley.
Mildred passed away June 2, 2014 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames at 103 years of age..
Mildred is survived by her son, Don (Shirlene) Brendeland, of Huxley and their children, Kathy (Steve) Pietsch, of Huxley, Linda (Jonpaul) Sauer, of Olathe, Kansas, and Eric (Sophia) Brendeland, of Hastings, Minnesota; her son, Jim (Cathy) Brendeland, of Ames and their children, Shelly Sams-Schmidt, of Mason City, Dianne Riedemann, of Story City, and Mike Brendeland, of Ames; several great-grandchildren; her brother, Orland (Vivian) Nerness, of Huxley; and her sister-in-law, Ila Nerness, of Huxley.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bud; and a brother, Glen Nerness.
Memorials may be directed to Bethany Lutheran Church or Madrid Home Communities.
