SHAFFER FUNERAL SUNDAY AFTERNOON
LARGE CONCOURSE OF RELATIVES AND FRIENDS GATHERED TO HONOR DECEASED
The funeral services for Mrs. Newton Shaffer, who died at her home south of the city Thursday night, [July 26, 1926] were held Sunday afternoon at Central Presbyterian church, in charge of Dr. R. D. Echlin. The only music was a solo by Mrs. W. W. Shaffer. Interment was in the Nevada cemetery.
The church was filled with relatives and friends of the neighborhood, as well as a large number from a distance, who came to pay their final tribute of love and respect to the deceased.
Mrs. Adeline Flater Shaffer was born May 24, 1865, at Bloomfield, Indiana, and died July 26, 1928, aged 63 years, two months and two days. She was the third daughter of M. V. and Polly Ann Flater. She came to Iowa with her parents at the age of two and one-half years and the family located at Tipton, Iowa.
There she was united in marriage on March 11, 1881, to Newton Shaffer. To this union were born four daughters, one of whom, Mrs. Ethel Reitz, preceded her mother in death. Those living are: Mrs. Lydia Lounsberry, Mrs. Chloe Williams bot of Nevada; Mrs. Clara Whitinger of Riceville, Iowa, and one son, Arthur, of Nevada. In addition to the children she is survived by her husband, Newton Shaffer, two sisters, Mrs. Sherman Bolton of Tipton, Iowa and Mrs. Guy Barron of Waterloo; five brothers, the sixth, Samuel Flater having preceded her in death 14 years ago. The others are: John at Redfield, S. D.; David, Sioux Falls, S. D.; Alfred, Donald and Norman, all of Waterloo; also by her stepmother, Mrs. M. V. Flater of Waterloo. There are fourteen grand children and a host of relatives and friends.
About 1895 the family moved to Nevada where the home has since been, with the exception of three years. Mrs. Shaffer was a member of the Leisure club, the Woman's Relief Corps and American Legion Auxiliary. On Sunday, January 27, 1897, she was received on a profession of faith into the Presbyterian church of this city. She was a loving wife, a dear mother, a true friend to every one, always ready to lend a helping had to anyone in need.
Among those from a distance who were here to attend the funeral, were the daughter, Mrs. Clara Whitinger and family of Riceville; a sister, Mrs. Sherman Bolton, her husband Sherman Bolton, daughter Ruth and John McQuillen, all of Tipton; a niece, Mrs. Ida Schultz of Atilissa, her grandson, Lester Williams and wife of Waterloo; Mrs. M. V. Flater, Alfred, Donald and wife, Norman and Guy Barron and wife, all of Waterloo; a brother, David Flater and wife, son Harry and daughter Grace, all of Sioux Falls, S. D.
