Maxwell resident killed

NEVADA -- Story County Sheriff's Office officials reported last week that a local man was killed in an automobile accident in the area.

Mark Stephen Riesen, 23, of Maxwell was killed Sept. 24, 1987 at about 7:45 p.m. when the car he was driving ran into the rear of a tractor pulling a grain wagon eastbound on highway 210. Riesen was also eastbound at the time of the accident.

Riesen was the son of Rev. Gehrald and Yvonne Riesen of Glidden, IA. He moved to the Maxwell area with his parents approximately 15 years ago from Crown Point, IN. Riesen's father was the pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Nevada for over 12 years. Yvonne Riesen was a member of the Nevada Board of Education for six years.

Riesen's sister, Becky Smith, is a resident of Nevada. His brother Dean resides in Minneapolis.

The tractor was driven by Randy Lee Dubberke, 29, of rural Cambridge.

Dubberke was pulling a grain wagon loaded with soybeans, and pulled onto 210 from a farm drive. The accident occurred approximately 235 feet east of the farm drive. Dubberke was uninjured.

Riesen was transported to Mary Greeley Medical Center by Mary Greeley Paramedics, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Sheriff's office officials on the scene of the accident noted that Riesen was not wearing a seat belt at the time.

Riesen had over the legal limit of alcohol in his blood at the time of the accident, testing around .224. The legal limit is less than .1.

Risene was a a diesel mechanic for Hicklin G. M. Power Co. at Ankeny, IA. He was also a member of the Isaac Walton League at Maxwell.

Funeral services for Riesen were held Monday at Central Presbyterian Church.

The Story County Sheriff's Office is seeking the assistance of a witness to the accident. The individual in question was traveling eastbound on 210 at the time of the accident. He is a white male in his late 50's or early 60's, driving a silver four door Chevrolet Impala. The witness is asked to contact the sheriff's office.
