Funeral Services Held Here Sunday for Mrs. Emma Barton
Funeral rites for Mrs. Emma Barton, 81, who passed away very suddenly at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ernest Turkington, here Friday, September 24, were held at the Morfoot Funeral home Sunday afternoon, with her pastor Rev. O. E. Cooley in charge, The services were followed by burial in the family lot in the Nevada cemetery, between her husband and daughter.
Mrs. Barton, a woman of fine personality and character, left many friends and acquaintances who will join with the daughter and family in mourning her loss.
The following life sketch was read by the minister during the services:
Emma L. Glass, daughter of Orsen and Martha Liggett Glass, was born at Melrose, Iowa, Oct. 20, 1861, and passed away on Sept. 24, 1943 at the age of 81 years, 11 months and 4 days.
In early life after attending normal school she taught school until her marriage to Harry Hunter Barton, who was a Methodist pastor in the neighboring town of Sigourney, Iowa. The marriage took place on May 9, 1883.
The Rev. Barton was born and raised in Lancaster, Penn., and was a graduate of Drew Theological Seminary in New Jersey. He was sent out to the Iowa Conference after graduation and it was at that time the he met his wife.
To this union two children were born, Mabel V. and V. Muriel. Mabel died in 1928, following an attack of the flu. Muriel was married to Ernest B. Turkington of Nevada.
Reverend and Mrs. Barton were in the active work of the church until the health of Rev. Barton was such that he retired from active service in 1914. The family came to Nevada where the daughter Mabel was teaching at that time. The following are some of the charges served by Reverend and Mrs. Barton, Anita, College Springs, Adel, Menlo, Scranton, Council Bluffs, Carroll, Dunlap, Missouri Valley, Woodbine, Indianola and Coon Rapids.
Mrs. Barton was a woman of exceptional executive ability. She was capable along many lines of church work and wherever the family went Mrs. Barton did her part.
Until six years ago she lived in her own home in Nevada. At that time illness caused her to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Ernest Turkington where she has since resided.
Since early life she was affiliated with the Methodist Church. She was a member of the Nevada Methodist church at the time of her death.

Besides her daughter she leaves three grandsons, Barton, Malcolm and Harry Turkington.
Mrs. Barton lived a long and useful life, she was a faithful member of the parsonage family for many years and left the impression of her character on the many people she met. She was true and devoted mother. Her work on earth is done and we would only say of her, "she hath done what she could."
