Lars Rasmussen, 74, long time and highly respected citizen of this community, died very suddenly at the home 1204 Fifth street late Tuesday afternoon, death being due to a heart attack.
Mr. Rasmussen was working in his garden shortly before 5:00, when Mrs. Rasmussen, working in the yard near by, saw him fall. She hastened to his side, found him unconscious and calling assistance, carried him into the house where he had passed away almost immediately. A heart attack was the cause of death.
Mr. Rasmussen, a retired farmer, had no been so well of late, yet his condition was not considered serious and he had been up and about the spring work at his home as usual.
His sudden death came as a great shock in the members of his family, his neighbors, and friends.
Mr. Rasmussen was a native of Fyen, Denmark, where he was born November 10, 1862. He died at Nevada, Iowa, April 6, 1937, age 74 years, 4 months and 27 days.
He came to America and directly to Story county in the spring of 1884 and on November 7 of that year was united in marriage to Miss Christina Rasmussen, a young Danish girl who had come over at the same time.
The ceremony, which was performed at Ames, was a double one, Rasmus Rasmussen, a brother of Christina, being the other bridegroom. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Wynn of Iowa State college.
Mr. Rasmussen was employed on the farm at Iowa State college for a few years, farmed in Boone county for about a year and then bought a farm in south Milford township, which was the family home until they retired and moved to Nevada, March 1, 1931.
Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Rasmussen. Otto, the only son, died December 21, 1915, and he is survived by his wife and seven daughters. The daughters are Mrs. Lena Peterson, Mrs. Anna Sorenson, Mrs. Evelyn Larsen and Mrs. Ruby Nelson all of near Nevada; Mrs. Mary Haugsted of Milwaukee, Mrs. Ida Nelson of Minnesota and Mrs. Ruth Nelson of Boone county.
He also leaves 22 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one brother and three sisters in Denmark.
Mr. Rasmussen had been confirmed in the Lutheran faith when a boy and had long been affiliated with Memorial Lutheran church in Nevada.
He had been a resident of Story county for over 53 years and was known as one of the successful farmers and livestock men of the county, was honest, industrious and energetic and was beloved husband and kind and considerate father.
Mr. and Mrs. Rasmussen had celebrated the golden anniversary of their marriage at their Fifth street home on November 7, 1934, when their seven daughters, together with their families were present.
The funeral services will be held on Friday, with a prayer service at the home, followed by the funeral at Memorial Lutheran church with his pastor, Dr. J. O. Simon in charge. Burial will be in the Nevada cemetery.
