Edna M. Hayes, 86, of Clarinda died Friday of complications arising from a stroke at the Golden Red Manor Nursing Home in Clarinda.

She was born in Marshalltown to Fred and Clara (Robertson) Downes. She married John Hayes on June 5, 1928. He preceded her in death in 1974. She had been employed at the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company.

She is survived by one brother, Don Downes of Tempe, Ariz.; and eight sisters, Helen Kirtz of Arveda, Colo., Charlotte Lonergon of Boone; Pearl McFarlin of Winterset; Doris Mowen of West Des Moines, Dorothy Scheuermann of Mesa, Ariz., Maxine Warbritten of Ashland, Neb., Ruth Becker of Pawway, Calif. and Irene Whattoff of Ames.
