H. Scott Hurd, 58, of Roland, IA, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, March 27, 2014. Scott is one of 3 children born of Elizabeth Ann Hurd (Luter) and the late Howard Eugene Hurd from Pensacola , FL , February 18, 1956.

Scott filled his younger years with surfing off the Pensacola beaches and playing football. An encounter with Christ during this time led him to combine all his efforts with his faith and in 1973, he was named outstanding Christian athlete in Pensacola, FL. He received a football scholarship from Virginia Tech, playing the defensive line. There he met his wife of 38 years and graduated with a degree in Biology preparing him for admission into Veterinary School.

He received his DVM from Iowa State University in 1982. After 3 years of dairy practice in PA, he joined the graduate program at Michigan State University receiving a PhD in Epidemiology/Economics in 1990. His expertise in risk assessment led him on the constant quest of researching how to provide safe food, farm to fork. He served 15 years with the USDA both in Ft. Collins, Colorado and then at the National Animal Disease Lab in Ames, IA. He received a political appointment under President Bush to serve as the Deputy Under Secretary for Food Safety in 2008, serving as the senior member of the nation’s food safety team. Most recently, Scott served as associate professor at Iowa State University’s Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine and director of the Food Risk Modeling and Policy Lab. He became a passionate, practical and understandable expert spokesperson for livestock farmers and the meat industry striving to continuously improve best practices to feed the world. His message would bridge the communication gap between the farmer and the consumer. As a result, he gained international respect as an epidemiologist, food scientist.

Everywhere Scott lived, he found a way to make a difference in the local body of Christ. He was constantly striving to understand and in turn explain the practical but sometimes difficult issues of faith and formation to his family, friends and colleagues. He was devoted to his wife and family, a perfect gentleman and hero to them. He provided daily instruction to his children through morning prayers and supported their home education. He had a missionary zeal that resulted in multiple “Family Missions” to Mexico, and Nicaragua. In 2000, his quest for understanding the original church led him to the join the Catholic Church with his 7 children. He consistently lived a vibrant and authentic faith centered on Christ. His influence and unwavering example of practical faith application impacted many lives and entire families along his journey. His priorities were always clear, Christ, his family and his profession. In each area, he excelled, few regrets and great rewards resulted.

He will be dearly missed by his wife, Susan Irene, his 8 children, Anders and wife, Lindsay (Willard), Colin and wife, Kimberly (Becker), Dillon, Evan, Britta, Franz, Garek, and Hendrik as well as his mother, Elizabeth Ann, and his two sisters, Sharon Maser, and husband, Tom, and Becky Glover, and husband, Doug, and, in addition, two dear grandsons and many nieces and nephews.
