Lewis C. Rierson, 79, well known retired farmer, died at his home at 707 Eighth street in Nevada at 2:45 o'clock this morning.
Mr. Rierson had been in declining health, following a very serious illness more than a year ago. His condition had been critical during the past week, during which time he had been under the constant care of his physician, a registered nurse, Miss Julia Hennessey, and the member of his family.
Lewis C. Rierson was born in LaSalle county, Illinois April 22, 1882, and came to Story county with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Rierson when but a small child. Raised on a Story county farm, and educated in the rural schools, he was married to Miss Emma Jorgenson, March 2, 1877.
They established their home on a farm in Milford township where he became one of the prosperous farmers of that community north of Nevada.
Mr. and Mrs. Rierson continued actively upon the farm until fifteen years ago when they retired and moved into Nevada. They established their home at 707 Eighth street, which was the scene of their golden wedding anniversary in 1937, at which time all of their children were home to assist in the observance of the event.
Mr. Rierson is survived by his wife of these many years, and the children, Ward Rierson of Milford township; Mrs. Louise Menzel of northwest of Nevada; Mrs. Mabel Menzel, who has bee in the home with the past few years, and son Lawrence Rierson of Arcadia, Calif. Two daughters predeceased him in death, one at the age of 18 months and the other Mrs. Nettie Stevens, who passed away in 1929.
A granddaughter, Norma Stevens, who made her home with the grandparents until recently, and seven other grandchildren also survive him, as do three sisters, Misses Ena and Anna Rierson of Roland and Mrs. Mary Folergo of Des Moines, and one brother, Richard Rierson of Minnesota. One brother, Dan Rierson preceded him in death a number of years ago.
Mr. Rierson was baptized and christened in the Lutheran church and after locating in Nevada he became an active member and a faithful attendant at Memorial Lutheran church, where funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with his pastor, Dr. J. O. Simon in charge. There will be prayer at the home at 1:30 and interment will follow the funeral in the Nevada cemetery.
Lewis C. Rierson was a man of outstanding character and held in the highest esteem by those who had long known him. Forceful and industrious, he was a man of good judgment and of highest integrity.
In his death the family lost a kind, indulgent and loving husband and father, whose memory will be cherished, and hsi acquaintances have lost a valued friend.
