OBITUARY MRS. SUTHERLAND

Was Pioneer Woman of Community and Well Beloved

Funeral services for the later Mrs. D. E. Sutherland, 80, whose death occurred Tuesday* morning at 8:00, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. P. E. Bump in Ames, were held Thursday afternoon at 2:00 at the Methodist church of this city, of which she was a member, after which she was interred in the Nevada cemetery by the side of her husband, who died January 19, 1918. The services were in charge of and the sermon was preached by Dr. R. M. Shipman her pastor and friend.

Mrs. Sutherland was a native of Pennsylvania, her maiden name being Ann Rebecca Cook, born January 28, 1842. Later the family including herself and her sister, Mrs. Melvina Fetterhoff who died at her home a months ago, came out to Franklin Grove, Ill, where they lived for some little time before coming to Iowa, where she was married February 4, 1869, to David E. Sutherland, a young Civil war veteran, who had come here and rented the Silliman farm south of the city, where he established a home for his bride. There they live continuously for 45 years. This record between a land lord and tenants is thought to have established a record in the state.

Their eight children were all born and raised to manhood and womanhood on this farm and it was not until about 9 years ago that Mr. and Mrs. Sutherland retired from work and moved to this city.

The children all of whom are still living to mourn the death of their parents, are Frank C. Sutherland of Nevada, Mrs. Percy C. Bump of Iowa Falls, at whose home the mother was at the time of her death, A. Jay Sutherland of Whittier, Calif., Charles G. Sutherland of this city and Mrs. W. H. Kirkendall of Salem, S. D., twins, Bruce Sutherland of near this city, Mrs. C. B. Smith of near Cedar Falls, and Mrs. P. E. Posegate of near Nevada. There are also 26 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Until the last few months Mrs. Sutherland, although well advanced in years had enjoyed fairly good health, but during the winter which she had been spending with her daughter at Iowa Falls, she had been failing rapidly and her death was not unexpected.

She was converted to the Christian religion as a girl of 17 years and remained faithful to that trust in God to the end. She was along time and faithful member of the Methodist church of this city and was one of the women of the congregation greatly esteemed by the pastor.

Mrs. Sutherland was a woman of many very fine characteristics, was loved deeply by her family much admired by the neighbors and friends who were favored with a close acquaintance.

She had lived to a ripe old age, continued to possession of her faculties to the end and passed on, beloved and mourned by all who knew her.

* Ann Rebecca "Rebecca" (Cook) Sutherland died on 21 March 1922 in Iowa Falls (not Ames, as stated) at the home of her daughter, Ida (Mrs. Percy C.) Bump.
